A disproportionate burden of this war has fallen on rural Americans.
According to the National Rural Health Association, 44% of US
military recruits come from rural areas, while only 19% of the nation
lives in rural areas. Patriotic appeal, fewer employment options, and
a lack of a military draft have not spread the call to service evenly.
