PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Rep. Mike Michaud of Maine is now ranking Democrat on the Veterans Affairs’ Committee, a panel on which he has served since being sworn into office in 2003.

Michaud was selected by the House Democratic Caucus on Wednesday, and the appointment became effective immediately following the resignation of Rep. Bob Filner of California.

Michaud says he’s looking forward to working with Republican committee Chairman Jeff Miller of Florida to address veteran employment, VA claim backlogs, and health care needs.

Rep. Tim Walz, a Democrat from Minnesota, committee member and member of the National Guard, says ensuring support and care for veterans is not a red or a blue issue and that Michaud has proven himself to be ‘‘a steady, staunch advocate for our nation’s veterans.’’end of story marker
