LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — Maine’s Roman Catholic Diocese is paying tribute to health care professionals and caregivers during the church’s annual White Mass.

The church held its White Mass services Sunday morning at Lewiston’s Basilica of Saints Peter & Paul.

The Mass celebrates doctors, nurses, emergency medical technicians, therapists and others by offering a blessing for their contributions to the healing mission. It is named for the color of the vestments wore during the day, with white also being the color associated with the medical profession.

The Mass is schedule to coincide with the World Day of Prayer for the Sick, which takes place on Monday.end of story marker
