PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Portland’s fire chief is urging residents to help firefighters dig out hydrants whenever possible following a fire that critically injured a 50-year-old woman.

Firefighters arrived Sunday to find the burned woman outside the home, and they had to quickly dig out a snow-buried hydrant to douse the flames.

Fire Chief Jerome LaMoria says the woman was initially taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland before being airlifted to a Boston hospital in critical condition. Her name was not immediately released.

LaMoria tells The Portland Press Herald that a dozen additional firefighters have been deployed to help the department dig out the city’s 2,500 public and private fire hydrants.end of story marker
