PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Islanders turned in 2,300 pounds of unused, expired and unwanted medications as part of an annual drug take-back event.

The Drug Enforcement Administration for New England reports that the six states in the region collectively turned in over 59,000 pounds of medications. Maine led the way with 22,000 pounds, followed by Massachusetts with 20,000.

Last Saturday’s collections were part of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, which aims to provide a safe way to dispose of prescription drugs and prevent their misuse.

Providence has begun offering year-round medication collection at a bin at the Providence Public Safety Complex. The purchase of the bin and advertising for the new program is funded in part through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the state behavioral health department.end of story marker
