Unity-to-Burnham rail route to carry riders again

UNITY, Maine --A passenger rail service linking Unity and Burnham in central Maine is being restored and trains will be running again starting Father's Day weekend.

The Belfast & Moosehead Lake Railroad trains stopped running in 2004, prompting area businesses to form a nonprofit organization to keep the service going.

Starting June 17, a 1913 coal-powered steam engine will pull passenger cars along the route, which winds past Lake Winnecook and the Sebasticook River. Trains will run weekends until June 29, when the schedule expands to four days a week.

The excursions are popular with sightseers and riders heading to special events, such as the Common Ground Country Fair.
