CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine—More than 500 Maine athletes with mental disabilities will begin competition Monday as the 2008 Special Olympics winter games get under way at Sugarloaf USA.

Maine was the birthplace of the winter games, which made their debut in Gorham in 1970. This marks the 26th year that they're being hosted by Sugarloaf.

The athletes arrived at Sugarloaf over the weekend, and the opening ceremony will be held at noon Monday, the day the competition begins. The events will include Alpine and Nordic skiing, snowshoeing and speed skating.

The games are scheduled to wrap up on Tuesday.
