WATERVILLE, Maine—Some Mainers are rushing to get passports during a showdown between Maine and the Department of Homeland Security over the Real ID law.

The Morning Sentinel newspaper says there has been a steady stream of people picking up passport forms. Some were simply replacing expired passports, but most wanted to be prepared with a valid ID in the event of sanctions against Maine for failing to comply with the Real ID law.

Sonja Morin of Fairfield was one of them. She says she wants to safeguard a summer trip to Las Vegas, so she's applying for a passport for the first time.

Maine is balking at the cost of Real ID and it also has privacy concerns. Starting May 11, Homeland Security plans to impose new air travel restrictions on residents of states like Maine that either haven't moved to comply with the law or haven't asked for extensions.
