Montville passes ordinance to ban genetically engineered crops
MONTVILLE, Maine --Montville residents have approved an ordinance that bans genetically modified crops from being grown in the Waldo County town.
Voters at Saturday's town meeting gave their support to an ordinance that requires farmers to phase out genetically engineered crops within two years.
According to the group Food for Maine's Future, the vote marks the first time a town outside of California has banned genetically engineered crops. The Maine towns of Brooklin and Liberty have passed nonbinding resolutions declaring themselves to be "GE-free zones."
