State to announce winner of I-295 reconstruction contract

RICHMOND, Maine—State transportation officials are ready to announce their pick to reconstruct the southbound stretch of Interstate 295 between Gardiner and Topsham.

The Department of Transportation plans to close the 18-mile portion from mid-June to August to repair the road. During that time, traffic will be diverted to the Maine Turnpike and Route 201.

Officials say shutting down southbound traffic altogether is safer, cheaper and faster than closing single lanes here and there over three construction seasons.

Transportation Commissioner David Cole will appear Monday at his agency's Richmond field office to announce the winning bidder and answer questions about the shutdown.
