BANGOR, Maine—A Penobscot County grand jury has issued a murder indictment against a homeless man accused of killing a fellow transient.
Police had charged Stephen James, 56, with the lesser crime of manslaughter when they arrested him last week in connection with the death of Clyde Worster, 63.
But Deputy Attorney General William Stokes said Monday that as more details were developed it became apparent that murder was a more appropriate charge.
Defense attorney David Walker of Bangor said people should remain open-minded. He said the entire story has not yet come to light.
James, who was indicted Monday, is being held at the Penobscot County Jail.
Worster's body was found April 27 in a wooded area near Interstate 95 in Bangor.
