LEWISTON, Maine—Two paper companies with operations in Maine -- NewPage and Verso -- have filed for public ownership.

Papers detailing the initial public offerings were filed Monday with the Securities and Exchange Commission. NewPage Group Inc. has a mill in Rumford and Verso Paper Group has mills in Jay and Bucksport. Combined, the mills employ about 3,000 people.

Verso, which is owned by Apollo Management, wants to raise $300 million from the sale of 18,750,000 shares of common stock.

NewPage, owned by Cerberus Capital Management, hopes for $805 million also through the sale of stock, but it does not list the number of shares nor the expected price at offering.
