Tentative settlements in brain havesting lawsuits

PORTLAND, Maine—Tentative settlements have been reached in half of the lawsuits contending the brains of deceased family members spouses were taken for medical research without proper consent.

The Portland Press Herald says tentative settlements in seven out of 14 lawsuits were disclosed in a document filed this week in Superior Court. Settlement conferences in the remaining lawsuits are scheduled for next month.

More than 100 brains were sent to the Maryland-based Stanley Research Institute from the state medical examiner's office between 1999 and 2003. At least 15 families contend they didn't give consent for the brains to be donated.
