AUGUSTA, Maine—A senator from Maine is asking that the U.S.-Canadian border station at Van Buren, which was closed May 1 as a result of flooding, be reopened as soon as possible.

Sen. Susan Collins made her request in a letter to officials at the office of Customs and Border Protection and the General Services Administration. The northern Maine port was closed when flood water from the St. John River damaged the building and raised uncertainty about the stability of soil supporting the access road and plaza at the port.

Collins, a Republican member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, said it's critical to those who live and run businesses in the area that the port be reopened to vehicular traffic as soon as possible. She asked that soil tests under the port be expedited.
