Maine supreme court to hear appeals in two murder cases
PORTLAND, Maine—Maine's highest court hears arguments Thursday in appeals by two convicted murderers who claim they acted in self-defense.
Supreme court justices will hear the appeal of Steven Clark, a former Portland mortgage broker serving 43 years for the 2006 gunshot slaying of his friend, Robert Wagner. At his trial, Clark testified that he fired in self-defense after Wagner came at him with a knife.
Later, the court takes up the appeal of Daniel Roberts of Sabattus. Roberts was handed a 55-year sentence for shooting ex-girlfriend Melissa Mendoza in 2005. The two were embroiled in a custody battle over their 2-year-old daughter.![]()
