MACHIASPORT, Maine—Red tide continues to cause headaches for shellfish harvesters in eastern Maine.
State officials on Tuesday closed Cobscook Bay and parts of the Down East coast to mussel harvesting due to red tide, a toxic algae that concentrates in shellfish, making them dangerous for humans to eat.
Clams have now been added to the red tide closure along portions of the coast from Machiasport to the Canadian border.
The Department of Marine Resources reminds the public that it remains safe to eat clams or mussels that are sold at stores and restaurants.
