PORTLAND, Maine—The field has been narrowed to 10 semifinalists in a competition to create painted designs on huge oil tanks in South Portland.

The nonprofit Maine Center for Creativity received more than 500 submissions for a design to be painted on the tops of 16 Sprague Energy Corp. oil tanks and on the sides of eight of them.

Executive Director Jean Maginnis said the 10 semifinalists will be winnowed to five finalists who will be in Maine in August to present their ideas in a series of public forums.

Maginnis said project is on schedule to be completed by 2011. In all, some 4,500 gallons of paint will be needed to cover more than 260,000 square feet of the tanks.
