BANGOR, Maine—A Standish man faces multiple charges after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase that reached speeds of 100 mph with an 18-month-old girl in his car.

Maine State Police say 23-year-old Anthony Alfiero sped off after giving a false name when he was pulled over Saturday on Interstate 95 in Bangor.

Alfiero allegedly tried to outrun police through three towns before he ended up on a dead-end street in Veazie.

There, police say Alfiero abandoned the car with his girlfriend and her 18-month-old daughter in it, but that it kept rolling another 50 or 60 feet before striking several trees and coming to a stop. Alfiero jumped into the Penobscot River before being arrested.

Charges include aggravated reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, endangering the welfare of a child, driving to endanger and eluding police.
