AUGUSTA, Maine—The National Weather Service posted a flood warning along the Kennebec River in central Maine and a flood watch Down East a day after severe thunderstorms and possibly a tornado hit the state.
Some towns, including Poland and Cornish, got over 3 inches of rain, and Portland was drenched by nearly 1.77 inch -- a record for the date -- during Thursday's storms.
In towns along the New Hampshire border, there were numerous reports of wind and lightning damage. A funnel cloud was reported in Bridgton, where trees were uprooted by high winds.
The weather service office in Gray says a team will be sent to the site to inspect the damage and determine whether a tornado had hit the area.
Across the border, utility crews, emergency officials and the Red Cross fanned out across central New Hampshire to help people and to assess the damage from what some said was a tornado or tornadoes the day before.
