HIGHLAND PLANTATION, Maine—A community in Somerset County with a population of about 55 is considering whether to deorganize.
Highland Plantation has scheduled a special town meeting on Aug. 11 to talk about that possibility and decide whether to develop a deorganization process and elect a local commission.
Assessor Jo Dunphy said more than 20 people signed a petition seeking to deorganize and come under the administration of the state. Dunphy says the move is prompted by an increase in education costs and taxes.
Dunphy said the petitions met the legal requirement by getting the signatures of at least half the number of voters in the last gubernatorial election.
