PORTLAND, Maine—Portland, Maine police are seeking help from any witnesses to the circumstances surrounding a reported assault on a soccer field early Saturday that preceded the death of a 37-year-old man.

On Sunday, authorities identified the dead man as Frank Williams III, whom they described as a transient resident of Portland.

Police officers responding to a 911 call about a crowd at the soccer field and a beating at about 1:40 a.m. Saturday found Williams on a sidewalk on Fox Street. They said he had apparently climbed through a hole a the chain link fence at the soccer field and collapsed, suffering from at least one stab wound.

Williams was pronounced dead at Maine Medical Center.

Police on Sunday were awaiting a report from the State Medical Examiner's Office.
