PORTLAND, Maine—Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Tom Allen's campaign is demanding that Republican Senator Susan Collins condemn an ad that depicts union members and Allen as tools of organized crime mobsters.

Critics say the ad, which has been appearing on Maine TV, is misleading because it distorts the intent of federal legislation designed to make it easier for workers to organize a union.

Organized labor leaders in Maine are joining Allen in condemning the ads.

The Collins campaign is denouncing the ads and says it has nothing to do with them.

The ads are aired by a coalition of primarily composed of business and industry associations.
