BANGOR, Maine—A defense attorney says his client stole more than $43,000 from elderly patients at an assisted-living facility in Bangor to feed her gambling habit.

Forty-one-year-old Lucia Faria of Bangor was sentenced Wednesday in Penobscot County Superior Court to three years in prison for stealing money from three patients and her employer over a three-year period. Faria worked as a housekeeper at The Country Villa.

Defense attorney Kirk Bloomer said Faria gambled away the money in slot machines at the Hollywood Slots casino in Bangor. He said his client banned herself from Hollywood Slots before she was indicted, sought treatment and attended Gamblers Anonymous meetings.

Faria, a Portuguese citizen in the United States legally, also faces deportation.
