WISCASSET, Maine—A Canadian company is gauging local support for a proposed $2 billion underground pump-and-storage power plant at the site of the former Maine Yankee nuclear power plant in Wiscasset.

Riverbank Power Corp. would generate electricity by having water from the Back River flow down wells, through turbines and into underground reservoirs. When power demand is low, the water would be pumped back to the surface and into the river.

Riverbank, based in Ontario, says it ultimately plans to build five of the so-called Aquabank projects. The company describes the Wiscasset property as one of the best of more than a dozen sites in North America now under consideration.
