PORTLAND, Maine—A 54-year-old Portland man charged in an armed robbery at a downtown coffee shop and suspected in a string of other holdups has made his initial appearance before a judge.

Richard Lee Campbell is being held without bail at the Cumberland County Jail pending an April hearing in Superior Court.

Campbell is accused of holding up Others Coffee Shop in Monument Square at gunpoint on Tuesday during the busy lunch hour and making off with $750 and a $3.15 biscotti.

Bail on the armed robbery charge was set at $100,000, but he's being held without bail for allegedly violating bail conditions from a previous arrest on domestic violence charges.

Investigators are still investigating whether Campbell was involved in three other holdups and a carjacking that took place within a 24-hour period Monday and Tuesday.
