3 New England states lead on math scores

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt.—New England scored well in the most recent round of math testing for school-aged students taking the National Assessment of Educational Progress tests.

Television station WCAX reports that Massachusetts fourth graders led the way, with a score of 252, versus a national average of 239. New Hampshire was close behind at 251. Vermont scored a 247, Maine and Connecticut each had a score of 244 and Rhode Island lagged the region at 238.

At the eighth grade level, Massachusetts was tops at 298, versus a national average of 282. Vermont and New Hampshire each scored a 292 -- tying North Dakota but lagging Minnesota's 294. Connecticut scored a 288, Maine a 286 and Rhode Island a 277.
