COBSCOOK BAY, Maine—Federal scientists and experts from the Maine Department of Resources spent three days this week exploring Cobscook Bay with special sonar equipment.
The goal is to figure out why Cobscook Bay has claimed so many commercial fishing vessels. Officials estimate a half-dozen boats have sunk in the bay in the last decade, including a 34-food sea urchin dragger that sank two weeks ago with three fishermen on board. Only one body has been recovered.
The Bangor Daily News reports that divers plan to take a closer look at two areas of interest the sonar equipment identified this week. Officials say there might be ledges or other obstructions that hook the boats' gear and cause them to sink.
