AUGUSTA, Maine—Maine is receiving $8.9 million from the federal government for assistance to homeless people in 43 programs across the state.

The Housing and Urban Development grant to Maine is part of a larger $1.4 billion national grant.

The government says the grants were put on a fast track to prevent any interruption in services as the harsh winter months arrive.

HUD says chronic homelessness in America has declined since 2005.
