PORTLAND, Maine—The sheriff of Maine's most populous county says he's not going to seek re-election later this year.

Mark Dion has been Cumberland County sheriff for 11 years.

The 54-year-old Dion says he has accomplished much of what he set out to do during his years as sheriff of the county that includes Portland.

During his time as sheriff Dion earned a law degree and he says that after he leaves office he plans to work on public policy issues, but has no specific plans.

The Portland Press Herald says Chief Deputy Kevin Joyce is planning to run for the office Dion now holds.
