LEWISTON, Maine—Participants in the annual fundraiser launched by "Grey's Anatomy" star and Maine native Patrick Dempsey can enjoy some special ice cream before biking off the calories.

Gifford's Ice Cream has signed on as the official ice cream and is offering up a special flavor: "Pedal Passion Caramel Crunch." Proceeds from sales during the event will be donated.

Dempsey, who's from Buckfield, launched the first event with a bike ride in Lewiston to raise money for the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center, where he was born. His mother's experience, being treated three times for cancer, spurred Dempsey to action.

This year, the Dempsey Challenge is a two-day event featuring walking and running events on Saturday, Oct. 2, before the cycling events on Sunday, Oct. 3.
