AUGUSTA, Maine—Owners of wolf hybrids are facing new laws enacted in Maine due to public safety concerns.
A new law bars ownership of wolf hybrids unless a person holds a valid state permit to possess wildlife in captivity. The law also says wolf hybrid owners must license their animals in the town where they live, and have them vaccinated for rabies and permanently identified. In addition, all currently licensed wolf hybrids must be neutered.
A law was passed earlier this year after legislators had heard testimony that the keeping of wolf hybrids posed public safety concerns and that the current regulation of wolf hybrid kennels did not provide adequate safeguards.
The Department of Agriculture will maintain a list of licensed wolf hybrid owners.
