AUGUSTA, Maine—Augusta has become the latest Maine municipality to ban fireworks.
City councilors Thursday night voted to ban the use and sale of fireworks in the city.
The Kennebec Journal ( http://bit.ly/vNR9rW) reports that councilors voted 5-2 in favor of the ban.
The Legislature this year passed a law legalizing fireworks in Maine beginning Jan. 1, but municipalities have the option to regulate them within their borders.
A number of other cities have already banned fireworks, including Portland, Bangor and Lewiston.
