JOHNSON MOUNTAIN TOWNSHIP, Maine—Police say a Mount Vernon woman has been injured after her car struck an injured moose that had already been hit by another vehicle.

The Somerset County Sheriff's Office says 70-year-old Phoebe Payne was driving south on U.S. Route 201 in Johnson Mountain Township on Wednesday when she ran into the moose.

The Morning Sentinel (http://bit.ly/uJWx17) reports that Payne swerved in an attempt to avoid the animal and her vehicle ended up in a ditch. She was taken by ambulance to Jackman Region Health Center with non life-threatening injuries.

The moose had previously been struck by a pickup truck driven by Arthur Pierce of Gardiner. He was not hurt.

The yearling moose died.
