NOBLEBORO, Maine—The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation has awarded a grant to help restore a fish passageway that's been in operation for more than 200 years between the saltwater Damariscotta River and the freshwater Damariscotta Lake along midcoast Maine.
The fish ladder was originally built in 1808 and is maintained by the towns of Nobleboro and Newcastle. Maine Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe says the $92,505 grant is going to the Nobleboro Historical Society.
Through the years, the towns have undertaken several joint ventures to repair the deteriorating passageway to ensure the continued migration and spawning of alewives. A full-scale restoration effort was launched in 2007.
