AUGUSTA, Maine—Maine lawmakers are due back in Augusta on Jan. 4 to begin their 2012 session.

The January-to-April session concludes the two-year session that started a year ago. The major focus, at least in the opening weeks, will be balancing the state budget.

To start things off, the House and Senate will meet Jan. 4, 5 and 10. They'll return for a short session Jan. 11 before leaving on a Maine Development Foundation-sponsored bus tour of businesses and educational institutions in southern and western Maine from Jan. 11-13.

The tour is designed to help Maine legislators gain a greater understanding of the complexity of the state's economy.
