WISCASSET, Maine—A Bath man accused of what police call a "vicious" knife attack on his girlfriend has been ordered held on $100,000 bail.

Matthew Wycoff appeared in court Wednesday via video conference from jail. The Bangor Daily News ( http://bit.ly/xFIawK) reports he said little except for a series of affirmative responses to questions from the judge about his legal rights and the charges against him.

Prosecutors say the victim was stabbed about the neck and shoulders Monday with a steak knife and is lucky to be alive.

Police say an argument between the 28-year-old Wycoff and the 38-year-old woman escalated when he grabbed the knife and stabbed her until the blade broke.

Police say the victim was taken to Maine Medical Center where she is in serious condition but expected to survive.
