Huge swaths of seaweed cover Maine beach
SCARBOROUGH, Maine—Crews at Scarborough Beach State Park have spent three days removing seaweed and debris that washed up during last weekend's storm, and say it could take two weeks to remove a 3-foot-high wall of seaweed that came ashore.
The popular beach is filled with swaths of seaweed, covering an area nearly as large as a football field. Rope, buoys, lobster traps and other debris are mixed in, making for a tedious removal process for park employees.
Officials told the Portland Press Herald ( http://bit.ly/JZbBtk) that workers are putting loads of seaweed in nearby woods, but they're hoping the tide will carry some back to sea.
Even with all the seaweed, there's plenty of sand that's not covered where people can walk, lounge and otherwise enjoy the beach.
