PORTLAND, Maine—The Navy says a nuclear-powered attack submarine that was severely damaged by a fire at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is going to be repaired.

Lt. Courtney Hillson, a Navy spokeswoman, told The Associated Press on Friday that engineering assessments are ongoing but that the Navy has made the definitive decision to repair USS Miami.

A former shipyard worker is charged with setting the fire while the sub was in dry dock May 23.

There had been lingering questions over whether it would make financial sense to repair the 22-year-old submarine. Early estimates put the damage at $400 million.

The fire caused heavy damage to forward compartments but did not reach the back of the submarine where the nuclear propulsion components are located.
