BAR HARBOR, Maine—Officials say a climber who fell 40 feet in Acadia National Park is recovering.

Supervisory Park Ranger Richard Rechholtz says Kevin Hills of Kittery slipped while climbing on rocks near Old Soaker on Saturday afternoon.

Officials say Hills bandaged his own head after a companion threw a backpack down to him. The first park staff to reach him was a lifeguard who swam from Sand Beach.

Rangers eventually used ropes to pull Hills to safety during a three-hour rescue operation. Then he was airlifted to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
