AUGUSTA, Maine—A Missouri congressman's comments about abortion and rape are having ripple effects even after his apology.

In Maine, U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe says Rep. Todd Akin should not represent the Republican party in this fall's election for U.S. senator .

Akin apologized Monday for his televised comments that women's bodies are able to prevent pregnancies if they are victims of "a legitimate rape," but he refused to heed calls to abandon his bid for the Senate.

Snowe, a Republican, issued a statement Tuesday calling his comments "repugnant and outlandish" and said it's is appropriate for the Republican Party to deny him any funding should he decide not to step aside before Monday's deadline.

Missouri law sets a deadline to exit the Nov. 6 election at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
