Two of the city’s elementary schools will open their doors this fall with new principals. Jane R. Gately has been named principal of MacArthur Elementary School, while Sara Lane is the new principal at Whittemore Elementary. Gately is a Waltham resident and has spent her entire career in the city’s school system, as a teacher and then as an assistant principal. According to the search committee, Gately cares deeply about students and was lauded for her straightforward style and commitment to the city and its schools. She earned a master’s degree in educational leadership from Framingham State University. In addition to having a doctorate in education from Boston University, Lane has an MBA from Framingham State. Lane has been a principal at several middle schools, and most recently was principal at an elementary school in Lunenburg. The search committee reported that Lane is an innovative leader who makes community a priority; helped increase achievement and learning in Lunenburg; and sees the unique talents in every student.
