Walmart Stores has spent about two years trying to get the green light to clear a wooded area of pines and oaks across the street from Wareham Crossing so it can build a retail and grocery superstore there. A smaller Walmart currently operates in a strip mall on the east side of town, and the company wants to close that location and relocate to the 26-acre parcel in West Wareham. Town Planner John M. Charbonneau said the company is “98 percent” through the permitting process, and once everything is approved, it will be allowed to clear about 22 acres of trees and shrubs so it can begin constructing the superstore. The Zoning Board of Appeals will hold a public hearing on the Walmart plan this Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the lower level cafeteria in Town Hall.
