METHUEN, Mass. (AP) — State police say one man has been killed and one seriously injured in a crash on Interstate 495 in Methuen that backed up traffic for miles.
Police said 35-year-old Jeffrey Plante of Newburyport was seriously injured when his northbound car left the road at about 3:30 p.m. Friday, hit the median and went airborne, colliding head-on with a southbound car near Route 213.
The man whose car was struck, 32-year-old Kurt Kelly of Westford, was killed.
Police said it’s not known why Plante’s car went out of control.
Police said two other cars were damaged but their drivers weren’t hurt and weren’t involved. Police said a tractor-trailer at the scene wasn’t involved.
The interstate was closed for about 45 minutes for a medical helicopter. The southbound lanes remained closed about three hours.
