The city’s schools are ending all outdoor athletic activities at 6 p.m. until further notice to reduce potential exposure to mosquitoes that may carry West Nile virus or Eastern equine encephalitis. Also, the district will supply insect repellent to players and coaches for outdoor practices and games. “The health and safety of our students, coaches, and families is our number one priority,” the school system’s interim superintendent, Stephen Dlott, said in an announcement on the new policy. “By having everyone leave the fields at 6 p.m., we are minimizing the risk of people at athletic practices and events coming in contact with mosquitoes.”
