NORWOOD, Mass. (AP) — A state trooper working a detail in Interstate 95 in Norwood has been injured after his parked cruiser was struck from behind by a vehicle traveling 60 miles per hour.
A state police spokesman says 27-year-old Trooper Kenneth Downey was in his vehicle at about 3:40 a.m. Wednesday when he was struck by a pickup truck with three occupants.
The crash caused extensive damage to the cruiser, and the trooper had to be extricated by firefighters. He was checked out at a Boston hospital and released later Wednesday.
All three occupants of the pickup were treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
Police said the pickup driver, 35-year-old Ricardo Lepe of Beverly, may have fallen asleep. He is expected to be cited for operating to endanger and marked lanes violation.
