LOWELL, Mass. (AP) — Republican U.S. Sen. Scott Brown is being criticized by Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren’s campaign for naming Justice Antonin Scalia as one of his ‘‘model’’ U.S. Supreme Court justices.

The conservative Scalia was the first justice mentioned by Brown in response to a question late in Monday night’s debate in Lowell. But he quickly added the names of Chief Justice John Roberts, Justice Anthony Kennedy and Justice Sonia Sotomayer, who was appointed by President Barack Obama.

Warren campaign manager Mindy Myers said in a statement that Brown’s naming of Scalia as a model justice ‘‘speaks volumes to the people of Massachusetts.’’

Myers says Scalia is adamantly opposed to Roe v. Wade and does not believe women are entitled to equal protection under the law.

Warren named Justice Elena Kagan, another Obama appointee, as her model justice. Kagan once served as dean of Harvard Law School.end of story marker
