LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) — A Lawrence woman has been sentenced to three months in jail for beating her neighbor’s cat so severely it had to be put down.
Nancy Rivera pleaded guilty Monday to animal cruelty.
The Eagle-Tribune (http://bit.ly/Pr9NqX ) reports that the cat was found June 18 in severe pain, hiding in a rented room in a small boarding house. The cat’s owner and the 34-year-old Rivera both lived in the house.
An investigator with the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals learned through interviews with witnesses that Rivera had beaten the cat with a mop handle.
They did not say what prompted the assault.
Authorities say the cat suffered a jaw injury so severe that a veterinarian concluded the kindest option would be to euthanize him.
