The Winchester Chamber of Commerce has donated $1,000 to the Department of Public Works to plant trees under the Peter Van Aken Permanent Street Tree Fund. Proceeds from the chamber’s annual garden tour made the contribution possible. Each year, the garden tour money goes to Winchester beautification projects, according to Dot Butler, chairwoman of the tour. Created in 2009, the Peter Van Aken Permanent Street Tree Fund is maintained through private contributions and supplements the town’s annual appropriation for planting, care, and maintenance of Winchester’s street trees. The fund is named in recognition of Aken’s many contributions to the town, including his role in re-creating a street tree program. For more information, contact the town’s Permanent Street Tree Committee at 781-721-7162.
