HALIFAX, Mass. (AP) — The fire chief in Halifax says a 26-year-old woman killed when her SUV crashed into tree appeared to be driving at more than 100 mph.

Officials say children’s dance teacher Caitlin Ledwell died in the accident on South Street just before 12:30 a.m. Saturday. Police say local residents pulled her from the burning SUV, but she was later pronounced dead at Brockton Hospital. No one else was in the vehicle.

Fire Chief William Carrico II says South Street has become like a ‘‘racetrack’’ since it was recently repaved. He estimated Ledwell was driving at more than 100 mph.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Ledwell worked at her mother’s dance studios in Halifax and Pembroke. She was senior class president at Silver Lake Regional High School in 2004.end of story marker
