TUSKEGEE, Ala. (AP) — Tuskegee University officials say former board chairman Andrew Brimmer died Sunday. He was 86.

Brimmer was the longest-serving Tuskegee board member when he announced his retirement in 2010.

He joined the Tuskegee board in 1965 and became chairman in 1982. The university’s business school is named for him.

Brimmer, an economist, was also the first black person to serve on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System since its founding in 1913. He had been appointed to that board by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966.

He was the president of Brimmer and Co., a consulting firm based in Washington, D.C., that he established in 1976.
